Summary.
A revolution that started with a relatively small group of workers protesting their hunger. The number of protesters quickly increased with disaffected soldiers joining in. With royal troops away fighting at the front the city of Petrograd fell into a state of chaos that led to the abdication of the Tsar William II who was replaced by the Russian Provisional Government
Feb. March Revolution and the Fall of the Tsar
- Took place March 8-12 1917
- Began with hungry workers going on strike, bread!
- Held in Petrograd (Now modern day St Petersburg)
- With many soldiers deserting and royal soldier away fighting the city fell into chaos
- Marked the abdication of Tsar Nicholas II's reign as well as the end of the Romanov Dynasty
- End of the Russian Empire
- Russians felt they had won their freedom at last
- The Tsar was replaced by a Russian Provisional Government led by George Lvov
- New government was an alliance between liberals and socialists
- Petrograd soviet was formed by socialists to rule alongside provisional government
